The trees are up!

This Christmas is a tough one. We are doing this holiday without my Mom. She loved Christmas and made so many fun and meaningful traditions as we grew up. Christmas is just so magical but the spirit feels quite different right now so I decided to do something different in decor as well.

I think that is enough.

Pulling out all the beautiful ornaments and memories might feel too emotional this time around. Still feeling super raw in grief but trying to embrace the joy of the holidays. Bringing out my Mom’s Christmas quilt that she made it extra special.

My Mom also painted a Christmas village over 15 years giving her kids one each year at Thanksgiving. I have 15 structures and lots of accessories. She worked on these houses for 6 kids all year.

This year the beautifully hand painted village sits above our kitchen cabinets and glows 24/7. It’s lovely. A real treasure.

I really like this look though. With all the other plants in the house it just seems more natural to have multiple trees.

I’m still trying to figure out the best way to set up our home because we’ve only been here since June. Not sure about the gray and the rolled arms on the sofas but I really wanted to try something different in this Georgian Colonial.

It’s comfortable in here. Lots of second hand pieces and a DIY fireplace surround give it a little rustic-vintage style that I like.

We were super lucky to get snow this year as well. Here in Virginia it doesn’t snow much but when it does snow, it feels like an extra big treat. (a Utah born girl who doesn’t love a full winter of snow – {been there, done that, LOL}.

The trees I used are from different places and don’t truly match. At our home in CT we put a tree in the bonus room and the family room. The pencil tree has been with me since I was first married. He doesn’t make it to the show every year but I can’t let him go. Marc thinks its so ugly (lol).

I hope you have enjoyed viewing our Christmas 2018 family room and kitchen. I’m always looking for good inspiration and peeking into someone else’s space is so exciting to me. That’s why I invite you all into mine.

Enjoy this holiday season and embrace all the loved ones in your family. I’m at the age where I keep thinking I hope everyone is here next Christmas. Trauma – but I know this is something we all have to embrace. Change.
