Side Entry Refresh

Side Entry Refresh

Hello there and Happy July!

Today I am sharing the paint refresh on our side entry. This door leads into the garage. We use it more than the front door.

BEFORE

After 6 summers living here the doors are all due for a refresh. I recently shared on Instagram that I like white painted trim but I also like the trim and door to match.

Can you mix them?

Let’s talk about that.

In this view you can tell why I ask that question. Garage is white on white, door is dark on dark.

I added the trellis and planted a jasmine vine here to hide the utility gauge.

The finish on the door knob was coming off so I painted it with an appliance paint by Rust oleum. It’s sharp and crisp.

The warm toned containers against the darker colors looks so good to me.

In other news…

We added a new puppy to our family this week. (gasp)

Go figure, I am behind on everything but I so craved more love, companionship, happiness and cuteness in my life.

Meet Liberty! Our newest member at HBH!

So I really wanted a dog that is easy to train and is always happy and not aggressive. I mean, who doesn’t love a Golden Retriever.

We lost our little Mazi in November and I still feel a void without her.

Morkie Mazi

Mazi was a little Morkie. Rest in Peace sweet girl.

A puppy complicates things but it also brings us a lot of joy as well. Her happy, playful energy fills the house with life. Our Shitzu, Maya, does not appreciate the situation really but after a week, she’s getting better.

The door was originally painted Urbane Bronze by Sherwin Williams. I loved it but wanted something warmer but similar. So I chose Tavern Charcoal by Benjamin Moore.

I loved Urbane Bronze paint color for several years and used it in so many places. When I decided it was a good idea to paint our brick, that was the color (I was so excited). I had the paint color matched in a Behr paint that works for brick. It turned out much more gray than I imagined but it was fine. I liked it enough to keep it that way.

Alright, now for my opinion on white trim, dark trim and can you mix them?

Someone could think this looks mismatched but my opinion is that the garage and the door are each their own and they don’t have to match.

Looking at the whole photo you can see thick white trim on the windows. I chose very high contrast for our exterior.

I’ve always been a big fan of entry doors looking different than the other doors in a house. Same goes for the exterior too.

Having the trim and door match makes the door look bigger, more intentional. It looks cleaner to me. I like it on this side door because the trim is very generic and nothing really beautiful to highlight.

However, I went through this with my front door and concluded that because of all the deep tones under the portico, if everything is all dark nothing pops. I like the pretty trim and sidelights here and they deserve to be highlighted in white.

Each situation is unique and there are no rights or wrongs as far as trim matching. With the color drench trend, you are going to see it mixed all the time.

So do whatever feels good to you. Let me know what trim color you have and if you’d change it.

I have to let the puppy out again so I’ll sign off for now.

Have the most amazing day.
